Escaping from a high building

Last weekend a few colleagues that currently live in a six story high apartment building were discussing about the possibilities to evacuate their homes in case the main stairwell was compromised.
There are no fire ladders (but there is an elevator shaft, without the elevator :-) )

They are waiting for a fire escape rope ladder(?) to be installed.

I would feel quite comfortable having a good static 10mm climbing rope, a basic harness , a carabiner and a descender. I would also find it fun to rapel down any building, especially to avoid being roasted.

PETZL has a ready made kit called EXO Individual Evacuation System that fits in a small pouch.
Here is a video showing that this equipment requires technical training and should normally be used by professionals:

Most normal people don't have mountaineering experience or high angle rescue training, so it might be more dangerous to rapel down a building than waiting for help or trying to fight the flames with a fire extinguisher or even water.

What you would do?

the water pipes look very appealing to slide down

  1. a few days ago some guys flew from a low security prison using bed sheets to climb the wall down. Hence it is possible, and not only in the movies!
